Queen Anne Boleyn's execution was schedualed on the previous day of the 18th of May. But on the 19th Anne watched the sun rise. Anne had been tormented by hope and dispare. The agony of not knowing if you were going to die or be forgiven. She was ready to die, but due to her executioner, Jean Rombaud, was having difficulty arriving from Calais. Anne saw this as hope that king would forgive her and return her to his favor, more importantly his bed chamber.
I can't imagine what was going on in her head on the 18th of May. She had probably known who the next Queen of England would be, Jane Seymore. Not too long before Anne had walked in on Henry and Jane. Jane sitting on his lap.
Finally the day had come for her execution and she watched the sun rise. She was escorted to the tower green and went up the old scaffold steps. When the moment was right she began her speech:
"Good Chrsitian people, I have come hither to die. For according to law, and by the law I am judged to die. And therefore I will speak nothing against it. I am come hither whereof I am accused and condemed to die; but I pray God save the King and send him long reign over you. For a more gentle soverign lord. And if any person shall meddle in my cause I require them to judge the best. And thus I take my leave of the worldand of you all, and I heartily desire you all to pray for me. O' Lord have mercy on me, to God I commend my soul".
She removed her ermine mantie, fallowed by her headdress. As her ladies helped crying Anne said fairwell to them. Her necklaces were removed and her hair tucked into her coife. She kneeled before everyone and began repeating the words softly, "To Jesus I comend my soul, Lord Jesus recieve my soul". Her lady maids wrapped a blindfold around her eyes and tied it. The executioner had gotten the sword out while she was being blindfolded. He yelled, "Boy fetch my sword" and the blow was struck.
One swift strike across the neck and the Queen of England who reigned for only three years was gone. The very reason Henry VIII changed England forever, gone. Elizabeth became motherless and announced as a bastard. The Boleyns had fallen more quickly than they had risen. Her death meant many things: the king was now fully unstopable, any queen in the world could be killed, and Anne would become immortal in her own way.
After her execution her head and bother were gathered and taken to the Chaple de Vicula inside the tower of London and placed beneath the altar alongside her brother, unmarked. Less than ten years later her cousin, Catherine Howard, would join them along with George Boleyn's own wife, Lady Jane Parker, Lady Rochford.
Her memory and story would be passed down from generation to generation. The first Queen of England to be killed. Countless books, websites, (yes including mine), and movies are dedicated to her honor. She is more popular today than the rest of Henry's wives. So this week
