Though I've been studying the Tudors for ten years, I knew nothing of the men accused with Anne Boleyn. Today in Tudor History, (3rd of May) Sir William Brereton and Sir Francis Weston were arrested for having cardinal knowledge of the Queen, Anne Boleyn. When Anne was accused of having adultry with William and Francis, Mark Smeaton, Henry Norris and her own brother George Boleyn.
Sir William Brereton was born between the years of 1487 to 1490. He was the seventh child of Sir Randle Brereton of Ipstone, Shocklach, and Malps. Randle was knight Chamberlain, Knight Bammeret and Knight of the body of the King, Henry VIII. His mother, the daughter of Piers of Halton in Cheshire, her was Elizabeth. In 1521, William was a groom in the kings privy chamber. William recieved many royal grants which came to sum total of 100,000 a year.
In 1529, William married the daughter of Charkes Somerset, 1st Earl of Winchester and a widow to Sir John Savage as well as being the second cousin to Henry VIII, together they had 2 sons together, Henry and Thomas.
Francis Weston was th only son to Sir Richard Weston of Ufton Court in Berkshire near Mayford in Surrey, and Anne, daughter of Oliver Sandy Shere at Dorking in Surrey. In 1526 he is recorded to being a page at Henry VIII's court. Even through a large age difference, it appears the King took a liking to him; making him part of Henry's minor cirlces. round 1532 h3 b3dqme a Gentalman of the Privy Chamber which gave him unlimited access to the King. He became Knight of the Bath in 1533, and attended Anne Boleyn's coronation that same year.
Weston married Anne Pickering, daughter of Christopher Picking of Killington and Cumberlandin 1530. Together they had a son named, Henry. A chest made to celebrate their marriage made in wood with their faces carved in it still remains today on display in Saffron Walden Museum in Essex. Weston was the man whom Anne was reported to have said that Henry Norris came to her chambers not to see his betrothed Madge, but to try and sleep with her instead; though he did not succed.
Once Questioned William Brereton claimed Anne had solicitated him many times and that misconduct had happened on the 26th of November 1533.
Today everyone pretty much believes that William, Anne, Henry, Francis, George, and Mark were all innocet. Brought down by their enemies. A wrong move in the game of the Tudor Court. If anything was proven it was, you could fall just as quickly as you rose.
